Both my mother and father have been incarcerated. My mother is currently incarcerated and will be released soon. My father is out of jail, but he doesn't give a damn about me. I have been to hell and back with my mother due to her drug addiction.I joined NMVI at the age of 15 and in the 9th grade at M. B. Smiley High School. I am now 20 years old. So you can see, I've been around for a while. I came into the NMVI classroom a lost soul and came out a healing child. The day I joined saved my life. I have been hungry, scared and broken inside...and who was there for me? Ms. Gambrell and the NMVI family.I also joined this group because I've never had a real family, but for the past five years, I can truly say that I have had one. This program has changed my life. I used to think that I was going to be a drug addict and end up in prison like my mother, but instead I graduated from high school and plan to enter the military. I want to be a military nurse. I'm not going to prison. I broke the cycle in my family, against all odds.
